Name: Math & Motivation

Basic skills of different degrees of complexity are becoming increasingly important to enable full participation in all aspects of modern life. Deficits of basic skills (literacy, math & science) result in dropping out from school of young people and in consequence, their bad situation at the labour market, poverty and social exclusion.
Dropping out of school has also other reasons, it is often effect of discouragement, difficulties in learning and thus low achievements; belief that intelligence is fixed (some people have it or don’t); unfriendly atmosphere. These problems occur due to inadequate learning and teaching methods.

The EU’s plan for tackling early school leaving aims to reduce the average drop-out rate to below 10% by 2020. To give their contribution to this ambitious goal, eight organisations (schools and training providers) from 7 EU countries developed the idea for the project “Math & Motivation”. The aim of the M&M project is to improve basic skills of secondary school students in the sphere of maths and sciences and reduce dropout rate in Bulgaria, Croatia, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Spain.

The innovation that M&M project is planning to offer is the combination of three innovative teaching methods (self/peer learning, gamification and flipped learning) into one complex Collaborative methodology.

  • Creation of Collaborative learning methodology combining three innovative teaching methods (self/peer learning, gamification and flipped learning)
  • Developing and testing of a Curriculum improving the knowledge and skills of secondary school students in the sphere of mathematics and sciences (biology, geography, physics and chemistry)
  • Preparation of a Toolkit for Teachers, which will equip them with the methodological guidelines necessary to use the Collaborative Methodology and Curriculum, as well as information about other innovative and successful methods for students` encouragement and motivation.
  • Creation of online environment for teachers - an on-line version of the Collaborative Methodology and Curriculum to be used by teachers and students with the strong focus on achieving learning outcomes with the use of peer learning, quizzes and ability to check-mark rather than grade individual students

What is Collaborative learning methodology?

FINAL MM Logo

The Collaborative Methodology is an effective method developed by the project partners in "Math&Motivation" project. The methodology includes combination of proven teaching methods into one complex tool. It combines three basic methods: self/peer learning, elements of gamification and flipped learning into one, which in consequence leads to encouragement and motivation. With its use the students will learn more difficult subjects with less efforts, motivation will be higher, class climate better.
