Fostering Well-Being in Educational Institutions: The Methodology for Teachers

The Council of Europe defines well-being as "the experience of health and happiness," encompassing mental and physical health, safety, belonging, sense of purpose, achievement, and success. Well-being varies depending on age and life stage, and it comprises different dimensions, including emotional, physical, social, workplace, and societal well-being.

Well-being is of paramount importance in educational institutions, be it at the elementary or high school level, and it applies to all students, teachers, administrative staff, and school administrators. The quality of school life, including well-being, is a critical factor in measuring a school's effectiveness and its impact on students' academic success and participation in the learning process.

The concept of well-being in schools extends beyond academic achievements and grades. It focuses on fostering social and emotional skills, resilience, support, and personal growth in both students and educators. A school that prioritizes well-being not only enhances students' academic performance but also equips them with essential competencies for a fulfilling life.

The HOPE4schools project was initiated by seven educational institutions from six European countries with the aim of introducing a whole-school approach to well-being. The project involves school leaders, teachers, educators, inspectors, and policymakers and emphasizes that schools are not just places for academic achievements but also for nurturing social and emotional skills.

The "Methodology for teachers to introduce well-being in schools" offers a comprehensive guide to integrating well-being into the school environment. It is divided into seven parts, addressing various aspects of well-being implementation:

  1. Introduction: Provides an overview of well-being and its significance, including the project's background and idea.
  2. A Whole-School Approach: Offers examples and suggestions for developing a whole-school approach to well-being, emphasizing collaboration and involvement of all stakeholders.
  3. Supporting Teachers and School Staff: Highlights the importance of teachers' well-being, addresses their needs and challenges, and outlines effective teacher well-being strategies.
  4. Well-Being of Children and Families: Explores essential well-being definitions and common mental health issues faced by children, emphasizing the importance of family involvement.
  5. Assessment of Well-Being: Provides examples and templates for different assessment strategies and tools to measure the well-being levels of school staff.
  6. Implementing a Well-Being Strategy: Offers step-by-step guidance on introducing a well-being strategy in schools, including a checklist and action plan example.
  7. Good Practices and Examples: Presents more than 20 additional resources to inspire educators in promoting well-being among students and teachers.
