Stepping on the results obtained from the detailed desk research and fieldwork on the analysis of obstacles for employment of migrants and ethnic communities in SMEs and NGOs from the perspective of employers in Bulgaria, Sweden, Italy and Finland, the partnership of DIME project continued its work on the development of the core project products, namely the Methodology and training materials on Diversity Management for SMEs and NGOs.

The Methodology, Diversity Management for SMEs and NGOs, is in the field of human resource management (HRM). Unlike typical HRM textbooks, this book is a practical manual which does not require prior knowledge on diversity management. It is designed specifically for small or medium-sized enterprises, non-governmental organisations,
social enterprises or any other type of small businesses or non-for-profit entities. Many small organisations do not have a particular title for managing human resources, which is usually a responsibility of an owner, a manager or a team leader. Furthermore, they often lack resources for elaborated diversity management strategies or expensive external expertise to consciously work with inclusive employment and working environment, relying instead on the gut feeling. However, non-discriminative employment is not a matter of choice but a legal obligation by the law, which cannot be based on the gut feeling.

The focus of this handbook is on helping small organisations to attract talented and ambitious workers with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds or representatives of minorities. The journey to diversity management begins with explaining employers´ legal obligations and discussion on benefits and challenges of transition towards diversity management in general and ethnic diversity in particular. The second part of the methodology presents a step-by-step approach giving an overview over what can be done for elaborating a hands-on operational strategy towards inclusiveness and diversity. Afterwards, if this book motivates the employer to roll up the sleeve and start acting, there is an on-line training course available as help to self-help. The course is free of charge. To make a clear difference, the handbook answers the questions “WHAT shall be done and WHY?”, while the training course puts “HOW?” in the limelight.
