On February 6 and 7, 2020, the first ALTER - Alternative Safety Net meeting was held in Athens.
The dynamics of modern life have forced many people to interrupt their education at different stages. The reasons can be many and varied and are the subject of study in the initial phase of the project, which aims not only to combat the consequences but also to advise on the prevention in formal education. And the consequences can be summed up in the absence of basic knowledge and skills with subsequent difficult realization on the labor market, social exclusion low self esteem depression.
Formal education enables these people to complete their education in various forms – evening and shift schools, but the mandatory condition is to attend and pass the exams in all subjects provided in the curriculum, which is often an insurmountable obstacle. Early school leavers often need to improve their knowledge and skills in a particular field, as well as to obtain new ones that are missing from the curriculum, as well as needed and sought after by employers - effective communication skills, teamwork, digital skills, skills to negotiate and make independent decisions.
The ALTER project partners from Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Austria and Spain share the common problem and have set themselves a goal - to create a methodology for adult educators of all ages, available online, to facilitate the education of those in need, especially those with obstacles and disabilities. The topics in this methodology will be selected to meet contemporary labor market needs, be attractive to learners, and varied in form and content.
