Name: DROP-IN

Dropping out of school is a real social issue. More than 1 out of 10 young people in EU are school dropouts. Indeed, unemployment amongst young dropouts exceeds 40%. The EU has made the fight against dropping out one of its priorities and aims at reducing the drop-out rate to less than 10% by 2020.

This is what DROP’IN proposes: Formal and non-formal education must meet in order to fight against ESL and to motivate the pupils: creating an innovation by exploiting these two complementary environments. We mean by these motivating youngsters who dropped out, so they can go back to school and become again actor in their learning process.

In practical terms, this includes the introduction of non-formal methods in schools thanks to a partnership between associations, municipalities, universities, parents and schools where teachers and non-formal education experts lead innovation together and collaborate at each step of the project.

The transnational dimension of the project is essential: early school leaving is a reality in the partner countries where policies and experimentations are being implemented in order to reduce the ESL rate. The partnership allows an experimentation in various contexts to provide a suitable solution to European realities (rural environment, urban environment, migrant students ...)

GOALS:

  • To struggle against schools ‘dropping-out;
  • To fight against unemployment due to this issue;
  • To motivate youngsters to become actors in the society and to give them self-confidence;
  • To create a strong relationship between teachers and pupils in order to motivate them and create a feeling of confidence.

General objectives:

    • To collect non-formal education techniques that can be used in schools;
    • To transfer knowledge and know-how from experts to teachers;
    • To strengthen the capacity of teachers to integrate non-formal activities into their professional environment.

Specific objectives:

  • To create a partnership between associations, municipalities, universities, parents and schools. The goal is to create the ability of bringing together and involving the educational community;
  • To make an inventory of the training needs for teachers;
  • To give the possibility to the teachers to participate in a training using only non-formal education methods;

DROP IN logo CopyThe implementation phase of the DROP’IN activities can be summarized as successful both for the teachers and the students involved in the activities. During the experimentation phase of DROP’IN, 25 teachers from France (5), Bulgaria (6), Latvia (7) and Italy (7) participated in the evaluation of the activities.

DROP IN logo CopyDROP’IN ACTION is an online portfolio addressed to teachers, showing the experiential phase of DROP’IN project in which teachers and students put into practice the methodologies and activities developed and included in the EDUC’ACTION catalogue. This phase was implemented in the school year 2019/2020 and 2020/2021, a period of time which includes the restrictions and social distancing rules due to the COVID-19 emergency, which has brought to a general lockdown in many European countries. The lockdown period led the project partners to a deep reflection on remote education and techniques to be used online.

DROP IN logo CopyThe main aim behind DROP’IN project is to test the effectiveness of non-formal methods in learning about school subjects and transferring knowledge. DROP IN is in line with the recommendations of the EU working group on early school leaving, which states for example that “research shows that a caring relationship between teacher and student is the strongest factor in school attendance and success” while at the same time enhancing traditional teaching methods. But teachers today are facing new challenges and are seeing their role expanded to include supporting students. In order to help students to stay motivated, and therefore hooked, DROP IN proposes to support teachers in this mission by introducing and training them to the methods and techniques of non-formal education.

In Bulgaria, the national teacher training was organized in 119 SU within 2 working days (14.01. and 28.02.2020). The training was a great success among the 20 participants, they tested at all 10 activities presented in the EDUC’ACTION: THE EDUCATON IN ACTION! Manual.
